After only a month or so of using the standard wordpress blog, I’ve decided to move to my own host: betterthanblank.org (sitll using wordpress). Of course this brings up a whole new set of challenges (like why does my “recent comments” sidebar look so bad? – if anyone knows, please let me know how to fix it). Anyway, I’m not going to officially move the blog until I get all the kinks worked out. Go check it out and let me know what you think. And any of you pro bloggers, if you have any advice on how to move and keep things going strong, I’d love to know!

georgeI won’t be updating for a few days as we head up north to memorialize my Grandpa George, who passed away earlier this year. We were blessed enough to visit him a week before he passed and he got to see his great grandchildren, Miles & Macy. The one thing that I will always remember about my Grandpa is his art – he was an artist from the old school, pen & paper, illustration, commercial art, branding, logos, fine art – and he was good. If you want to know more about him, my dad has put together a memorial webpage for him located here.

I just got inspired by watching a CNET video (if you don’t know what that is, you need to get with it here). This particular video had a great list of open source programs to replace the new Adobe CS3 Suite. So I thought I would be a nice guy and list out as many cool open source programs as possible, as well as other cool, fun, & productive sites & programs – a resource page! Check it out here or click on the Resource Center link at the top of the page.

Here’s a great site for all you graphic designers – free vector art (we all know how hard it is to get your hands on that!). Vecteezy.com is a new sister site of Brusheezy.com – a free Photoshop Brush site, there’s another tip. Have fun designing!

vossWhen I began designing professionally in the early 90’s, stock photography was a tool that only high end design houses could afford. I remember seeing single photographs for over $300! Along came the internet, add in thousands of semi-pro and pro photographers and videographers, create a site where they sell their work for a reasonable price and you’ve got www.istockphoto.com. With 1,651,143 (1.4 TB) stock photographs and illustrations, this site is the place to find that perfect picture for your next marketing campaign, magazine ad, logo, whatever. I have been using istockphoto for about four years now and have had absolutely no problems, and they get better and better each year with upgrades, advanced searching tools, personal light boxes for storing files you may use in the future, and great customer service! If you are a designer, even if you just dabble – you should check out istockphoto.com
